Hello All, well yesterday, May 02, 2011 we flew to Alert from Resolute. We had the regular fuel stop at Eureka and arrived here at 1600 local (Ottawa time). The flight from Resolute to Eureka is pretty spectacular (flies over Axel Heiberg Island), and then from Eureka to Alert is even more spectacular.

Here is a view of the fantastic Twin Otter aircraft we get to use to fly from Resolute to Alert. These planes are incredible, they fly great, can take off and land in very very short distances (10s to a couple hundred meters) and I just love them.

Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg island are quite mountainous in parts and have large glaciers, and some small remnant ice caps.

Yet another glacier, but this time note the large meltwater channels on the surface of the glacier. |
But what gets me really excited each time is the view of the sea ice. It means we get to collect more measurements, but mostly because it is so beautiful out here. Its not just the same set of grey ice time after time, but lots of blues, huge piles of ridge ice, some blue ice, the mountains of Ellesmere in the background, it is just simply stunning.

Well that is it for today, we plan to go to the ice tomorrow. I was hoping to have a flight track from today to show you how our plane flies, but I haven’t been able to get it off my GPS yet, will do so soon though and I will edit this blog.
Cheers
Justin
